1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on your device by the websites you visit. They are widely used to make sites work, to remember user choices, to measure how a site is used, and to deliver advertising. This page explains what cookies and similar technologies VatInfo.org uses, why we use them, and how you can control them.
2. Categories of cookies we use
2.1 Strictly necessary
These cookies are required for the site to function. They do not store any information that personally identifies you. Without them, basic features such as remembering your last-selected country in the calculator may not work. Strictly necessary cookies cannot be switched off.
2.2 Analytics
We use Google Analytics (gtag.js) to understand which pages are read, how readers reach the site, and where pages need improvement. Analytics cookies collect aggregated information such as approximate location, device type, browser, and pages visited. We do not use analytics data to identify individual users.
2.3 Advertising
VatInfo.org is supported by display advertising, including Google AdSense. Google and other third-party vendors use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites, and to measure the performance of those ads. These cookies may also be used to limit the number of times you see a particular ad and to detect invalid clicks.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising by Google by visiting Google Ad Settings.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising from many other vendors at aboutads.info/choices (US) or youronlinechoices.com (EU).
For more on how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
2.4 Preferences
If you change a setting on the site, such as a default country in the calculator, a small preference cookie may be stored so we can remember that choice on your next visit. These cookies do not contain personal information.
3. Third parties that may set cookies
Cookies on VatInfo.org may be set by us or by third parties whose services we use. The main third parties involved are:
- Google Analytics — measures site usage in aggregate.
- Google AdSense and its certified ad partners — deliver and measure display advertising.
Each of these providers operates under its own privacy and cookie policies. We have no control over the cookies they set; please consult their own documentation if you need full detail.
4. How to control cookies
You can control cookies through your browser at any time. Most browsers let you:
- See what cookies are stored and delete them individually.
- Block third-party cookies entirely.
- Block cookies from particular sites.
- Block all cookies from being set.
- Delete all cookies when you close the browser.
Step-by-step instructions are usually available in your browser's help pages. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may break parts of the site; blocking analytics or advertising cookies will not affect access to the content.
To opt out specifically of personalised advertising, use the links in section 2.3 above.
5. Do Not Track
Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. There is no industry-wide agreement on how DNT should be interpreted, and we do not currently respond to DNT signals. The opt-out routes described in section 2.3 remain available regardless of your DNT setting.
6. Changes to this policy
We may update this Cookie Policy when our use of cookies changes or when applicable rules change. The "Last reviewed" date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was most recently checked. Material changes will be reflected by an updated date and, where appropriate, a notice on the site.
